Laughter Yoga to Help Seniors Improve Brain Health

WHAT:  The Delray Community Wellness Center is hosting a free event for the public to experience laughter yoga, brain games, and learn tips for improving brain health as it kicks off its new Healthy Brain Club.  Laughter has been scientifically proven to benefit mental health by releasing endorphins, the body’s “feel good” chemicals, reducing stress, and strengthening social connections.

Laughter Yoga, developed by physician Madan Kataria in Mumbai, India, is a combination of breathing techniques, simple movements, and simulated laughter. Sessions begin with exercises that mimic the physical activity of laughter.  Research published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that Laughter Yoga was more effective than physical exercise in alleviating the effects of depression in older women.

The event is part of Palm Health Foundation’s month-long series of “Train the Brain” initiatives to create awareness about improving brain health and showing empathy and kindness to those with mental health conditions.
