Networked: How Two Palm Beach County Nonprofits are Leveraging Community Connections in a Time of Turbulence

As COVID-19 isolates us more and more, two Palm Beach County nonprofit organizations are mobilizing their established community networks to bring residents together through technology in an enormous time of need.

Palm Health Foundation’s Healthier Together community-based networks and BeWellPBC’s county-wide networks are driving virtual connections and outreach to ensure residents have a voice and a role in developing solutions that are responsive to their needs.

Through tools like Facebook Live and Zoom, the Healthier Together communities and BeWellPBC are linking people to one another—particularly those with the greatest health disparities—to cultivate social connectedness and counteract stress, social isolation and concern about the future.

Specific examples include:

Healthier Delray Beach launched #HDBHelps, a Facebook live event on March 19th where residents were invited to share information about local resources and voice needs to be shared with city decision makers.

BeWellPBC hosted a Zoom video call on March 25th for county high school students to share their thoughts on mental health and ideas for helping fellow students.  A similar Zoom call for county behavioral health professionals is being planned.

In a joint effort, members of Healthier Boynton Beach and BeWellPBC’s new Boynton Beach BeWell Club made individual calls to 60 at-home caregivers to check in on their wellbeing and the needs of their loved ones.

In another combined effort, the two organizations are inviting residents to share their experiences during this time of uncertainty through SenseMaker, an online storytelling collection tool.  Feedback is anonymous and will be analyzed to inform how Palm Health Foundation and BeWellPBC will provide future assistance to the community.

Included below is a link and invitation to the SenseMaker tool. Please consider participating in this storytelling effort, and inviting your networks to participate as well.

To learn more about how these organizations are leveraging their networks to capture local community concerns and drive momentum for residents to identify and develop solutions, interviews with Patrick McNamara, president and CEO of Palm Health Foundation and Lauren Zuchman, executive director of BeWellPBC, can be arranged.
