Advancing Wellness through
Neuroscience and the Arts

Palm Health Foundation launched the Palm Beach County NeuroArts Collaborative in 2022 to bring together local leaders in brain science and the arts. Currently, the Collaborative is working to identify and map local partners, programs, resources, and existing research to support the advancement of neuroarts in South Florida.

MISSION
The mission of the Palm Beach County NeuroArts Collaborative is to convene partners who will build the field of neuroarts in Palm Beach County and guide and advance its practices to advance health and wellbeing.

Join the NeuroArts Collaborative!

Leadership and community-based engagement are essential to the progress of neuroarts. The goal of the PBC NeuroArts Collaborative is to develop the neuroarts into a fully recognized field of research and practice, with educational and training pathways, dedicated funding, supportive public sector and private sector policies, effective leadership, well-crafted communications strategies, and infrastructure capacity in south Florida. The NeuroArts Collaborative is building an ecosystem for neuroarts research, programs, and professional development here in Palm Beach County.

What is NeuroArts?

The emerging field of neuroarts links scientific explanations of artistic traditions dating back through the millennia to an actionable framework for translating that evidence into practice. NeuroArts exposes the mechanisms through which art impacts our brains, biology, and behavior, driving us towards health and well-being. It serves as a springboard for arts-based interventions and innovative programs that can be practiced in area clinics, homes, workplaces, and communities, all in service to individual and collective well-being.

The NeuroArts Blueprint provides the roadmap for this work. As the collaborative works to strengthen the neuroarts ecosystem in South Florida, a deep bench of experienced, creative, and visionary stakeholders pulls together.

More local champions are needed to foster the momentum that will encourage new partnerships to sprout, ideas to crystallize, and structures to be built—while ensuring that equity is front and center of decision-making from the outset. Join us in this field-building initiative!

Susan Magsamen, Co-Director of the NeuroArts Blueprint, speaking on Neuroarts to invited guests at Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, April 2023

“The arts trigger the release of neurochemicals, hormones and endorphins that offer you an emotional release. When you experience virtual reality, read poetry or fiction, see a film, listen to a piece of music or dance you are biologically changed. There is a neurochemical exchange that can lead to what Aristotle called catharsis, or a release of emotion that leaves you more connected to yourself and others afterwards.”

“Your Brain on Art: How The Arts Transform Us”

“What I saw was the expression in the absence of words. The arts give us another option for residents who are looking for health, hope, and healing.”-- Kenya Madison, Ed.S., Senior Director of Healthier Delray Beach, Describing local youth arts programming

Renée Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Awards The Renée Fleming Foundation has joined forces with the NeuroArts Blueprint initiative to establish the Renée Fleming NeuroArts Investigator Awards. The awards will support both basic and applied research that expands the evidence base of the emerging field of neuroarts and furthers the mission of the Neuroarts Blueprint. Two types of awards are available:

Basic Research Grants: To be jointly awarded to (1) an early career investigator engaged in a field of basic science related to neuroarts and affiliated with an academic or research institution; and (2) an individual working in an arts-based neuroarts discipline. The proposal must be designed to expand the science behind neuroarts, i.e., the scientific evidence that demonstrates the power of the arts to measurably change the brain and body in advancing the health and wellbeing of individuals. Fields of basic science related to neuroarts include neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, public health, neurology, complementary medicine, pediatrics, gerontology, and rehabilitation science and may involve others. Arts-based neuroarts disciplines include visual arts, dance, music, expressive writing, performing arts, digital arts, and may involve others. Two one-year grants, each for up to $25,000, will be awarded.

Applied Research Grants: To be awarded to (1) a post-doctoral fellow or PhD candidate with a demonstrated interest in the field of neuroarts and affiliated with an academic or research institution; and (2) working under the guidance of a faculty member affiliated with an academic or research institution and engaged in the field of neuroarts. The proposal must be designed to apply the science behind neuroarts in a community-based setting to advance the health and wellbeing of individuals or groups of individuals. Community-based settings include health, arts, and other community-related organizations and may involve others. Four one-year grants, each for up to $7,500, will be awarded.

Applicants may submit only one proposal and for only one type of award. Applications for both types of awards will be reviewed by a committee of experts in the field of neuroarts. The deadline for submitting proposals is February 1, 2024. Final award decisions will be made by the NeuroArts Blueprint leadership team in consultation with the Applications Review Committee and the Renée Fleming Foundation. Awards will be announced on April 1, 2024.
